How to Have Healthy Summer Hair: 4 Tips I Swear By

Summer is one of my client’s favorite seasons, but I’m going to be honest with you… it can be rough on your hair.

Between the sunshine, heat, humidity, pool days, lake weekends, vacations, and maybe a little extra styling for all the summer plans, your hair can start feeling dry, dull, brittle, or just not quite like itself.

And if you color your hair? Summer care matters even more.

The good news is, healthy summer hair is absolutely possible. You just have to be a little more intentional with how you’re treating it day to day.

Here are four of my biggest tips for keeping your hair hydrated, protected, and healthy all summer long.

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Hydration doesn’t just matter on the inside. It matters on the outside too, especially when we’re talking about healthy hair.

Summer can pull moisture from your hair so quickly. Sun exposure, chlorine, salt water, and heat styling can all leave your ends feeling dry and sad. And we all know dry ends can turn into split ends real quick.

This is why I always recommend having a good hydrating routine during the warmer months.

That might look like using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, adding in a leave-in conditioner, or doing a treatment mask once a week. Your hair does not need to feel heavy or greasy to be hydrated. It just needs the right products for your hair type and your hair goals.

And yes, this is your reminder to drink your water too.

2. Protect before contact

No matter what season it is, it’s always a good idea to use a heat protectant before styling your hair.

But in the summer, I want you to think about protection in a bigger way.

Your hair needs protection from hot tools, yes, but also from UV exposure, chlorine, salt water, and all the extra environmental stress that comes with summer. Not all heat protectants include UV protection, so this is something I always want my clients to pay attention to.

Especially if you color your hair.

The sun can fade your color, dull your tone, and dry out your strands. So if you’ve invested in your hair color, you definitely want to protect that investment.

Before you go outside, before you swim, before you curl your hair, before you use your flat iron… protect first.

Your future hair will thank you.

3. Turn down the heat

I know we love a good curl, wave, or smooth blowout, but your hair can only handle so much heat before it starts to show.

Even with heat protectant, too much heat or heat that is too high can still cause damage over time. If your goal is long, full, healthy hair by the end of summer, turning down the temperature on your hot tools is one of the easiest changes you can make.

You do not need your curling iron or flat iron cranked all the way up.

In fact, most hair types do better with a lower heat setting and smaller sections. You’ll still get the style you want, but with way less stress on your hair.

And please, please make sure your hair is fully dry before using a hot tool unless the tool is specifically made for damp hair. Styling wet hair with high heat is one of those little habits that can create a lot of damage.

Lower the heat, slow down a little, and give your hair a break when you can.

4. Be careful what you use

I’m sorry to say it, but not all products are made the same.

Some products are full of ingredients that can make your hair feel good for a day but cause buildup, dryness, or scalp issues over time. Others just are not the right fit for your hair type, texture, color, or long-term goals.

This is why I’m so picky about what I recommend.

I only suggest products that I trust, use in the studio, and know will actually support your hair and scalp long term. Because the goal is not just pretty hair the day you style it. The goal is healthy hair that continues to feel good, grow well, hold color, and work with you.

If your hair has been feeling dry, tangled, dull, heavy, or like it just will not style the way it used to, your products may be part of the problem.

And that does not mean you did anything wrong. It just means it might be time to adjust your routine.

Healthy summer hair starts with the right routine

You do not have to completely change everything you’re doing to have healthier hair this summer.

Start small.

Add hydration. Use protection. Turn down the heat. Pay attention to the products you’re putting on your hair and scalp.

Those little habits add up, and they can make such a big difference in how your hair looks and feels by the end of the season.

And if you’re not sure what your hair actually needs, that’s exactly what I’m here for.

At your next appointment, we can talk through your current routine, what’s working, what’s not, and what products or treatments would be the best fit for your hair goals.

Because healthy summer hair is not about doing more.

It’s about doing what your hair actually needs.
